Australia and South Africa are eyeing India's No.1 ODI ranking and would give their best in the five-match ODI series between them starting on Friday in Perth.
India achieved the number-one position after winning the second one-dayer against Sri Lanka in Ahmedabad by six wickets. India are currently ahead of South Africa by one rating point and followed by Australia at third position.
With two one-dayers to be played against Sri Lanka in Kolkata and Ranchi respectively, India will finish with 117 ratings points if they go on to win the last matches. If Sri Lanka emerge victorious in the last two matches, India will go down to 114 points but will still hold the No.1 position by fraction of a point if the visitors register win on Thursday.
Keeping all this equations in mind, both Australia and South Africa will lock horns in the ODI series.
If Australia wins the series 3-2, then it will finish on 115 ratings points while South Africa will drop to 114 ratings points. However, if the series result is reversed, then South Africa will end up on 116 ratings points and Australia on 113 ratings points.
If Australia manage to win the series 4-1, they go up to 117 ratings points and South Africa will drop down to 112 ratings points. If the the outcome of the series gets reversed, the Proteas will bag 118 ratings and Australia will drop to 111 ratings.
While, coming to the individual ODI player rankings for batsmen, South Africa's AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla are placed in top two positions.
George Bailey is the highest-ranked Australia batsman at fourth place and Shane Watson returning from an injury lies 15th place. While, Australian captain Michael Clarke is the other batsman inside the top 20 at 17th place.
In the ODI rankings for bowlers, third-placed South Africa pacer Dale Steyn will be looking to reduce Sunil Narine's 38-point gap. The other South Africa bowlers inside the top 20 include Ryan McLaren (11th), Morne Morkel (14th) and legspinner Imran Tahir (19th).
